Automotive lighting ballast work basically refers to the electronic components employed in regulating the current and voltage supplied to the headlights. This is to ensure that the lamps are properly operational and efficient especially for certain classes of headlamps such as HID (High-Intensity Discharge) lamps.

Where to Fit Ballast in a Car?

Typically, ballasts in a car are installed close to the headlights. Some places commonly include:

Behind the Headlight Assembly – Often times, ballasts are positioned directly at the back or joined on top of some light housing for easy reach and short wiring.

Under the Hood – Some cars have dedicated locations for mounts under their hoods; this way they are shielded from outside elements but still near headlights.

Inside The Engine Compartment – Most often, they would be mounted inside engine compartments either on inner fenders or firewall.

Ballasts Types

Different kinds of ballasts are used in automotive lighting with each being suitable for specific types of lighting technologies. Here are some common ones:

HID (High-Intensity Discharge) Ballasts:

HID bulbs employ these types of bal.lasts. They provide high voltages required to ignite xenon gas within bulbs and then regulate currents steady enough to maintain constant light output.

Example: A standard HID ballast might output 85V and require 12V from the car’s electrical system.

LED Ballasts (Drivers):

Function: For LED headlights, drivers (often referred to as ballasts) control the power supply to ensure consistent light output and protect the LEDs from voltage spikes.

Example: LED drivers convert the car’s 12V DC to a lower voltage for the LEDs, which may include heat dissipation and dimming.

Fluorescent Ballasts:

Function: It is not used in modern automotive lighting, but it was once used in cars for interior lights or specialty lighting. Regulate current to fluorescent tubes to work properly.

Example: A compact fluorescent ballast for a car might convert 12V DC to the required voltage and current for a small fluorescent tube.
